Being a seamstress myself, I would think that elegant fabrics such as Rayon Velvets, Crushed Velvets, some of the gorgeous silks that are out there now would all make great evening purses. If you sew, then mix up the fabrics in either shapes or squares and mixing up the prints to stretch some of the more expensive silks. Embellishing is the frosting on the cake. Have Fun.
